Description
Six 30m x 2m evaluation trenches were excavated within the areas of the 1.3ha site to be subject to greatest development impact. A further six trenches, designed to investigate other parts of the site, were held in reserve pending the results of the initial trenching. No archaeological features, deposits or finds were encountered in the initially evaluated areas, which were found to have been largely truncated and/or disturbed through modern activity therefore it was decided not to implement the aditional trenching. Natural geology varied along the length of each trench from mid-greyish yellow clay to orangey brown sandy clay and gravel, sandy in places. No subsoil was present in Trenches 1-3 where a modern made-ground horizon was identified directly overlying the natural geology. Topsoil in Trenches 1-3 was a compact light greyish brown sandy silt. In Trenches 4-6 a light yellow firm silty clay subsoil was recorded.
