Description

Archaeological monitoring was carried out during repairs to Market place car-parking at RAF Lakenheath. The area was stripped on the east side of the site and four deep test holes were excavated across the site. The set holes showed a layer or stony and between 0.15m and 0.30m deep that lay under modern deposits and over subsoil. The sand layer was identified as the same deposit sealing archaeological elsewhere on the base. Much of the area stripped was not excavated to the depth of this layer. No finds or features or archaeological interest were identified. However, as archaeological levels were not reached it is not possible to conclusively state that the area does not contain archaeological deposits.
