Description

2016: Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd were commissioned to carry out a primarily photographic, Level 1, built heritage survey targeting the undesignated redundant and derelict factory buildings and structures of the former British Xylonite Factory in Brantham, Suffolk. The survey works were carried out prior the proposed regeneration of the site. A key focus of the investigation was to incorporate a comprehensive development of the site from the holdings of the Suffolk Records Office in Ipswich. The investigation revealed a number of structures in very poor condition and so neglected and damaged that interior inspection was not possible. However, the buildings which survived at the time of the survey were adequately recorded to meet the requirements of the Brief set and the requirements set out for a Level 1 survey as defined by Historic England. The aim of the survey work is to produce a permanent record of the site and the former Xylonite factory buildings (south of the railway) in their present condition. This will ultimately form part of an ordered archive and report that will ‘record’ the buildings and structures affected by the proposals and thereby, in part, mitigate their loss. (S1)
