Seven evaluation trenches were excavated ahead of a small residential development to a depth of 0.6m-0.8m with the topsoil being 0.2m-0.25m and the sandy subsoil 0.25m-0.6m deep. The natural glaciofluvial deposit at the site was a freely draining orange sand with flints typical for a former heathland (S1).
