Description
Monitoring of footing trenches for an extension. The trenches were deep (up to 1.6m), the conditions were wet and the trench sides unstable. In view of the danger of entering the trenches all observations were made from ground level using a tape measure. Natural clay was only observed on the extreme northern edge of the site. Dark soils of brown silty clay and black peaty loam were present to 1.2m deep in the north-east, 1.4m along the south-east edges and 1.1 m in the north-west area. One sherd of lateb medieval pottery was recovered from the spoil. The dark deposits witnessed in the footings trenches of over 1 m depth were probably within a cut feature such as a ditch or pit (S1).
