Description

2017-2018: Between April 2017 and January 2018, Cotswold Archaeology (CA) and Suffolk Archaeology CIC (SA) (now part of Cotswold Archaeology) carried out an archaeological set-piece excavation (SPE) at Site 50, Ferry Road, Bawdsey, Suffolk (BAW 212) as part of the East Anglia One Offshore Windfarm project (EAOne). Site 50 encloses an area of approximately 3.8ha. EAOne Site 42 was located immediately west of Site 50 with Ferry Road providing the boundary between the two sites. Some of the features recorded within Site 42 may form part of the same archaeological activity as that recorded within Site 50. A total of 2.38ha were excavated across Site 50. The natural geological substrate was identified at an average depth of 0.5m below the topsoil and subsoil. It comprised a light-yellow and red-brown sand changing to a yellow-brown clay in the south-western corner of the site. This was overlain by a midred brown sand sub-soil measuring 0.16m–0.6m deep and this in turn was sealed by a mid-yellow brown sandy silt topsoil measuring 0.3m–0.44m thickness. (S1)
