Description
Resistance survey and Gradiometer survey were carried out in 3 areas surround Mettingham Castle: Area 1 The Inner Court/Keep, Area 2 South Bailey, Area 3 North Bailey. The resistance survey was successful at identifying probably foundations in the inner court/keep, however the magnetic survey failed to detect an obvious fireplace. In the North Bailey resistance survey identified an inner wall and buildings/surfaces. The results from the South Baily identified a former trackway/boundary and possible garden feature. Neither the resistance nor magnetic survey detected evidence for a fishpond in this area. Unfortunately, in places the clarity of the geophysical results is sometimes poor due to the ground conditions and small survey areas. As a consequence, the interpretation of the results is not always straightforward (S1).
