Description

An archaeological evaluation prior to the construction of an Air Park Display Area in RAF Lakenheath, on the edge of Caudle Head Mere, revealed an expanse of peat. Five trenches, 1.5m wide, measuring a total of 47.6m (4.7% of total site area) were excavated by JCB. All trenches showed that the top 60-I 00cm was made up of a disturbed sand containing modem debris throughout its depth. Under this up to four identifiable layers of peat and silt varying in total depth between 35cm and 40cm in trenches 3 and 4 and 90cm, 85cm and 80cm in trenches I, 5 and 2. The subsoil was a coarse grey sand immediately under the peat. The water table was encountered 1.6m below the surface at the west end of trench I and at 1.5m at the east end of trench I - it was not reached in the other trenches There were no archaeological finds or features. This suggests that this area may have been wet during the periods of intense occupation on nearby sites LKH 146 and ERL 023.
