Description

An archaeological monitoring was carried out on land off Goddard Road, Ipswich between the 18th and 25th of February 2010 during ground-works connected with the creation of a new salt barn at the site of the new SCC Highways Depot on the Whitehouse Industrial Estate. Visits were made over a week to see the stripping and excavating of a foundation pad for the new structure. No archaeological finds or deposits were noted during these visits. During the intermittent observation of the intrusive ground-works the general stratigraphy encountered consisted of approximately 0.1m of tarmac and hardcore surfacing above between 0.4m-0.5m of mid yellowish/orangey brown clayey sandy silt subsoil. This lay directly above natural bright orangey brown stony sandy clays with grey/brown chalky clay pockets and bands of pale yellowish orange sands down to an approximate depth of 1.0m-1.1m below surface level (S1).
