Description

The excavation of footings for an extension to Gardeners Cottage were monitored. Approx 75% of the footing trenches were seen. These were up to c.1m deep. The natural soil profile appeared to be similar across the site although it had been removered where the ground had been lowered when a previous extension in 1960s, had been built. The soil profile was made of 0.1m of topsoil, 0.3m of gravel with iron pan and 0.7m of clean sand. Beneath the sand the trench exposed the top of the coarse gravel. There were no archaeological horizons with the footings. The top of the natural subsoil was at a height of 30.5m OD (S1).
