Description

As a part of the Forestry Commissions Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) project ‘Trailing the Hidden Heritage of High Lodge’ a community fieldwork investigation was carried out with the aim of identifying the location of the former medieval Downham High Warren Lodge. The project was carried out over the course of three weekends in early 2018, with a final post-excavation training workshop onsite in mid-2018, by a small professional team and a group of volunteers. A geophysical survey was undertaken comprising a magnetometry survey using a Bartington dualGRAD 601-2 fluxgate gradiometer with measurements at 0.25m intervals along 1m traverses. The 120m squared survey areas was split into 20m grids which were geolocated using a Leica Viva GS14 Smart Rover GPS. An earth resistance meter survey was also undertaken of a 0.8 hectare area using a Geoscan Research RM85 set to 1m intervals and traverse with a frequency of 122.5Hz. A test pit excavation comprising eight test pits was undertaken following the survey.
