Description
A deskbased assessment and field evaluation was carried out ahead of development. Three trenches covering 3.5% of the site were opened. It was noted that the site was covered with a layer of gravel and that the area had been levelled. Similar results were obtained from all three trenches. Below the gravel surface, which varied beterrn 0.1-0.2m thick, was a brick rubble deposit, between 0.2-1m thick. Below this layer was a dirty silty sand deposit, which varied between black and dark brown in colout, which contained rubbish, from brick coal slate and clay pipe fragments to scrap metal. In all three trenches this deposit was still evident 1.2m below the surface. 4 test pits were excavated within the trenches. A similar sequence of deposits were recorded. Below the dirty silty sand deposit which extended between 1.7m-2m, were layers of brown and black pat containing occasional lenses of pale grey sand. The peat continued to 3.4m in some places (S1).
