Description
A pre-determination archaeological evaluation was carried out ahead of residential development on the site of the Eastern Counties Bus Depot. Five trenches (two adjoining) were excavated across the site. Subsoil was found at 0.6-1.02m below ground level. Under the modern layers c0.25-0.34m deep was a uniform layer of even grey-brown sand 0.32m deep and overlay a thin layer of orangey-brown sand, the interface between the subsoil and the archaeological layer. In Trench 5 excavation revealed a 1.35m depth of pure, loose gravel, over c0.2m of grey-brown sand over gravel subsoil. A sixth trench was dug to trace the line of the wall (S1).
