Description
Eighteen machine cut trial trenches, each 30m in length (4% sample). The evaluation area comprises part of a larger area that had been subject to a geophysics survey and a previous phase of trial trench evaluation at a much lower density. The trenches revealed a natural subsoil (c.1.2-1.6m deep) consisting of yellow to orange gravelly sand or chalk. In the majority of trenches this lay just below the modern topsoil at a depth of c.0.35m. Evidence for truncation of the surface of the natural subsoil, in the form of plough lines, was present in most trenches. Frequent field drains form of stone filled slots were also present (S1).
