Description
Evaluation was carried out in advance of building work. 7 trenches were excavated to c. 1m deep. Disturbance was encountered by the cellar frontage. Beneath the disturbed surface rubble in trenches 1-5 was a layer of silt. This layer did not exist in trenches 6 and 7, here there was a substantial depth of dark loam containing medieval pottery. Both soil deposits overlay river gravels which sloped away towards the river (S1).
