Description

The archaeological evaluation, as specified in the WSI for the Phase 1 area (Lanpro 2020), consisted of the excavation and investigation of 26no. 30m trial trenches at 1.8m wide (a total of 780 linear metres, a 5% sample of the 2.8ha site. Metal-detecting was carried out during the topsoil and subsoil stripping and throughout the excavation process. The geological substrate predominately consisted of light to mid yellowish and orangey-brown clay and sandy gravel with moderate inclusions of pebbles. The subsoil, which had a variable thickness of between 0.06m and 0.38m, consisted of mid orangey-brown silty sand with moderate fine to coarse pebbles. The ploughsoil, whichhad an average thickness of c. 0.30m, consisted of loose, dark greyish-brown sandy silt.
