Description
2020: An archaeological evaluation by means of trenching was undertaken in advance of the Gateway 14 new industrial estate. The evaluation was conducted across three arable fields, totalling 21.5 hectares located in the northern part of the Gateway 14 development area. A total of 82 trenches were excavated comprising 76 trenches measuring 50.00m x 1.80m and 6 trenches measuring 30.00m x 1.80m. The topsoil encountered across the site was around 0.30m thick. The horizon between the topsoil and the underlying surface geology was clear, with occasional plough-scarring and impressions left by farm machinery (mostly localised along tramlines) obscuring the horizon in places. In Trenches 36 – 38, 60 – 63 and 77 – 79, located in the base of the valley at the eastern end of the site, a colluvial subsoil deposit was encountered. (S1)
