Description

In May to June 1994, the Cambridge Office of the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England carried out a survey of 'The Street' on Orfordness, Orford, Suffolk. Ordnance Survey control and the earthworks and building remains themselves were all recorded at RCHME Level 2 using a Wild TC1610 theodolite with integral EDM and plotted at 1:1000 scale. No research was carried out by RCHME and only a brief summary report was written; the survey was intended to aid the National Trust in their research into the site. The Street originated as a First World War airfield and eventually housed staff of the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. When the survey was undertaken many of the buildings were dilapidated and the National Trust intended to demolish some on completion of full recording. For more information, contact Angus Wainwright of The National Trust in Suffolk.
