Description
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during groundworks of a small extension to the front of 19 St Botolph's Way, Haverhill. The north and west footings were open at the time of the visit but the south had yet to be excavated. The footing trenches showed the ground level had been raised by 70cm with a re-deposited soil that included coal, brick fragment and other recent material. The original topsoil was identified close to the bottom of the trench and sealed a horizon of mid brown clay laom that ran in a uniform band, 25cm deep and directly over chalk/clay subsoil. A single small sherd of late medieval coarseware pottery was collected from the trench within this layer. The base of the trench was cleaned but there was no evidence of cut features.
