Site Event/Activity record ESF29790 - Evaluation - North Lake, Wilderness Reserve

Between the 13th and 17th of November 2023, Wardell Armstrong LLP (WA) undertook an archaeological evaluation at North Lake, Wilderness Reserve, Yoxford, Suffolk. The site is centred at National Grid Reference (NGR): TM 394 703. It was commissioned by The Client who intend to create a new lake as part of a wider master plan for Cockfield Hall (Fig. 2). The evaluation was undertaken in accordance with a written scheme of investigation (WSI) produced by Wardell Armstrong. 21 Twenty-one trial trenches excavated each measuring 30m x 1.8m and totalling an area of 1,336m2. The general stratigraphy of the local area comprised Topsoil (1000) comprising dark grey-brown friable silty clay with moderate small to medium subangular to sub-rounded flints to an average depth of 0.25m. Beneath (1000) was Subsoil (1001) made up of firm mid yellow-grey-brown silty clay with occasional small to medium sub-angular flints averaging 0.10m in thickness. Beneath (1001) was the Natural substrate (1002) which was firm mid yellow-grey and yellow-red silty clay with moderate small to medium sub-angular to sub-rounded flints.
