Description

Monitoring of a shallow trench excavation within the north (lower) bailey of Clare castle. The trench was part of the enabling works of a larger project to de-silt the moat between the upper and lower baileys; and was excavated to generate an earth bund around a temporary lagoon which would hold the excavated silt while it dried. The monitoring demonstrates that within the lower bailey the medieval archaeology exists very close to the surface, and it is almost certain that the undulating ground represents landscape features.
