Full Description

December 1871: Stone coffin containing male inhumation of "about 25 years of age", found `trenching for root-cutting'. Excavation by Henry Prigg followed. A further stone coffin found alongside the first containing a `man of about 50 years of age' buried in "quick lime". Close to these, also with head to S, was a plain lead coffin, apparently originally within a larger wooden casket as indicated by nails, containing "a female of about forty years". This and "a crescent-shaped mass of concrete foundation" were found under "a confused heap of fragments" of fired clay and sandstone roofing tiles. Another inhumation found with head to "S by SW" was found "immediately at the foot of stone coffin No. 2" (E of stone coffins) covered by "an oblong pavement of large Roman tiles, placed at the same level as the lids of the stone coffins". Further "loose human bones" found around "spot where the lead coffin was discovered". Two coins of Probus and Crispus were found close to the stone and lead coffins (S1)(S2)(S3)(S4). Grid reference cited to position as marked on map in (S1), possibly now under A1101.
For continuation of cemetery, see IKL 033 & 063, and possibly IKL 092.
