Full Description
Building & pottery scatter on unploughed sand dune. Spread defined during 1980 RB survey (S1) ? and by Briscoe in 1951 (S2, S4).
1951: Briscoe reports many Rom sherds, "black, grey, red, colour-coated, pseudo-samian, mortaria. Numerous pieces of slag, rough iron, bones, portions of roof tiles". Notes spoil from rabbit workings on top of dune black as opposed to yellow sand elsewhere. Rabbit hole on S slope "disclosed suggestion of building" (S2)(R1).
Briscoe diary records same information and also notes a "piece of quern, some sherds, found by TMB in 194-?" On August 15th, she dug trench (with TMB & LB) which revealed "soil black down to 15 ins then about 6 ins of chalk rubble stone had been tunnelled by rabbits. The chalk stones look like artefact(s), floor or tumble from walls" (S3).
1980: RB survey located further 37 sherds micaceous & non-micaceous grey ware, 2 sherds oxidised, 1 ? mortarium, 1 Nene Valley, 1 Colchester/Pakenham CC, 1 shell gritted, floor tile, brick & 2 fragments of daub (S3).
