Full Description
`The Vineyard of the Abbey' shown on Thos Warren's map of Bury in 1776 (S1).
Walls defing South and main part of East boundaries survive as Scheduled Monument. Interior partly built over by school etc and playing fields but still good potential for below ground survival.
2003: Archaeological monitoring recorded a largely re-deposited soils close to the wall. The first three layers seal a buried soil horizon which contained a horizontal piece of timber. The main disturbance appears to relate from the erection of the prefabricated building, which was demolished in advance of the new construction. No evidence for the medieval vineyard was observed (S6).
