Full Description

Water filled remains of rectilinear moat, circa 200+m x 170m.
Note: research by Uhi Millington (Writtle College and the Univ of Essex - see dissertation) suggest this was the house of James Parker. Following this William Kent was involved in the development of the pleasure grounds associated with it. A map (early C18th?) shows the house within the moat in some detail (SRO, HA:93 SA/12/53 (G20 1072)).
Shown not clearly, but with similar layout, on Hodskinson's 1783 map with various features, and shown in form similar to today's on OS 1st edition (1837)(S1)(S2).
? Site of Broom Hall - see PMed.
Manor also known as Uphall as early as C13. Thelnethams owned it in 1327 & were taxed 9 shillings. then owned by Bokenham family. In Suffolk record office (Bury) is a deed of Uphall Manor, dated 1441, which mentions the Bokenhams and a photocopy of conveyance of Uphall Manor in 1482 (S3).
