Full Description

Church of St Mary, circa 1330-1340. Nave, chancel, S aisle and S porch tower (S1). A church is listed in Haughley in Doomsday survey and Cautley dates the S doorway to late C13 (S2).
S of and within area of possible outer bailey of Haughley Castle - HGH 001.

2010: Monitoring and recording was undertaken during groundworks associated with the vestry extension. A total of twenty-six articulated inhumations and large quantities of disarticulated human bone were present in the 6.5m x 4.10m area. The inhumations predated the 1860s vestry wall which cut them and comprised seventeen infants and juveniles and seven adults. The infant and juvenile burials overlaid and cut the older adult burials. Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2010 (S3). Full report to follow.
