Full Description
Fritton Decoy.
`Broad' formed by peat digging (see Med) redeveloped ? in the C18 as duck decoys. Marked as `Fritton Decoys' on Bowen's 1753 and Hodskinson's 1783 maps (S1)(S3). In 1886 said to consist of four pipes at Ashby or E end of Fritton, E end, Ashby end, decoy where there were originally a group of seven of unknown date, worked by Sir Savile Crosby Bart. The W end worked by Colonel Leathes of Herringfleet Hall, 3 pipes (formerly 5). `Colonel Leathes says that he has no idea when his decoy was first made, but that it is certain it has existed over 200 years, and that it has been worked by his family 160 years'.
