Full Description
Ipswich town gas works, built 1820 (S1-S4).
1844 Tithe map and apportionment illustrates gas works slightly further north at TM170438. Tithe apportionment states: Owner: Commissioners of the Doc, Occupier: Gas Company, Description: Gas works (S5).
2002: Three features were identified during archaeological monitoring associated with the gasworks. These consisted of four substantial timbers in a line and a further group of timbers in two parallel line, 2.5m apart running for 26m. Within the eastern edge of the development area , two concentric red brick walls forming a circle with a maximum diameter of approximately 30m and spaced 1m apart with the gap being filled with packed clay (S3).
