Full Description
Sudbury town gas works, built 1836 (1892 lessee C H Grimwood, who was also owner of the Clare Works)(S1)(R1).
Shown on Tithe Map (S2) and later OS maps which show changing positions of tanks. Remnants levelled June 2002.
2002-monitoring identified a square cut postholes of a possible structure that could precede the construction of the gas works. A single modern glass fragment was recovered from the feature dating this to be no earlier than 19th Century. The impact of late 19th and early 20th century disturbances was extensive across the site and is likely to have excavated any archaeological horizons if present (S3).
