Full Description
Cock pit shown on John Chapman's 1787 plan of Newmarket (S1)(R1). Newmarket appears to have been as important as London in the C18 for cock-matches, which were advertised [?in Newmarket] from 1727 to 1840 (S1)(R2). `Site of cock- pit was where Jane's shop now is' (S1, 1984), ...`was sold by the Duke of Rutland in 1825 to David Fisher, a comedian of Sudbury, to become a theatre, and then some years later the Town Hall'.
Another cock-pit existed in the cellars of the Bushel Inn in the Rookery in Newmarket (S1).
