Full Description
Large seven storey tower mill built in 1860 on the foundations of a smock mill by William Bear. The patent sails were removed in 1929 following storm damage. The mill was dismantled in the 1940s when power driven machinery was installed in place of the stones. It worked until circa 1971 and is now disused. There were four patent sails fitted with Catchpole's `Air Brakes', four pairs of stones plus a fifth of small diameter, various small machines and a domed cap with a fantail. The roof is missing leaving the cap frame exposed to the elements, although the present owner hopes to preserve the tower (S1).
Post mill first mapped 1783 (R1), burnt down in 1814, smock mill built on site in 1815 and replaced with tower mill in 1860 (S2). Surviving tower mill on site of earlier mills is on a mound, now largely built over and the mill yard levelled (S3).
