Full Description
Hoard of 7 socketed axes from near Bury St Edmunds. In 1923 recorded as in collection of S G Fenton (of Mildenhall)(S1).
Second (or same?) bronze founders hoard reputedly from Bury St Edmunds (S2)(R1)(R2). Consists of:- A.2.1955/1-9, 9 complete socketed axes; A.2.1955/10-11, 2 damaged axes; A.2.1955/12-16, 5 pieces of bronze ingots. All were purchased by the dealer, R T Clough, at Sotheby's February 1955 and consequently, by Bolton Museum in March 1955.
In correspondence in August 1958 between Bolton and Moyses Hall Museum, the curator at Bolton states the actual hoard comprised 5 complete axes, one damaged axe and the pieces of ingots. The other items had been associated later and sold with the hoard (S2). ?Further details in Sotheby's sale catalogue (R1).
