Full Description
"Ufford Castle is an oblong moated site, divided by a ditch into two unequal parts, and is of manorial rather than military type" (S1). 3 miles NE from Woodbridge (S2). ?Same as OS TM25SE10, Homestead moat, Ufford (TM 29 52)(R1).
Shown on Bowen's map of 1755 (S3) as `The Castle' adjoining (on W side of) ruined chapel of Sogenhoe (UFF 004). The supposed castle was also mentioned by Kirby in 1764 (S5). In 1786 it is noted [by the Rev. Thomas Carthew of Woodbridge?] that 'in the site of the supposed castle an urn was dug up'.
No moat shown on 1927 OS map. No further details - try Tithe Map in SRO (Ipswich)(R2).
