Full Description

Fragment of a possible moat adjoining Ivy Farm. Consists of a wide water- filled ditch flanking the road at the front of the site. There is the start of a return at the east end, which has been broadened out into a farm pond with signs of a cobbled base. The western arm starts fairly broad, but tapers markedly towards the rear of the site. Nothing remains of the north arm except the slight beginnings of a return on the west side. The front part of the site is now a garden, divided by a wall from the rear part, which is the farmyard. The front part of the site, with a broad ditch on 3 sides, is only about 25m square, an area of about 0.15 acre. Ditch cleaned out November/December 1990.

July 1994: 1 base sherd Med coarse ware and 1 body sherd Roman grey ware recovered from spoil from pipe trench close to W arm of moat. Profile as sectioned by pipeline sketched & noted as circa 5-6m wide & circa 2m deep & silt filled (S2).
