Full Description

Excavation of a ring ditch of BA origin revealed the cross-shaped foundation of a windmill of post-mill type. The foundation measured 5.3m E-W and 3.8m N-S and consisted of large flints and yellow puddled clay set into a trench upto 25cm deep and 40cm wide. The top of the foundation seems to have been capped with pieces of plain tile, most of which had been disturbed by ploughing. In the western arm of the cross there was a 58cm long gap in the foundation, purpose unknown. The building of this windmill had displaced the centre of the visible mound 10m to the NW of the actual centre of the ring ditch.
To the N of the foundation a bronze sword chape of late C15-C16 type was found with a metal detector (S1).
