Full Description

March 1991: Fieldwalking assessment located one burnt flint and 4 flint flakes only on freshly ploughed field (S1).
August 1991: Excavation in advance of pipeline laying following topsoil stripping. This consisted of 8 small pits/post holes, three large pits and one large (5m x 4m) shallow (<20cm) spread of burnt flint & charcoal under which were concealed three small post holes and a 1.75m long slot filled with charcoal. This feature contained considerable quantities of pottery, flint tools and waste flakes. 5 and 10m W of this were two fairly substantial pits (1m diameter x upto 50cm deep) but with fewer finds. 19m SW from the main spread was a larger pit, 1.20m wide by 1m deep containing layers of silt, charcoal and organic material.
The E edge of this group of features is 50m E of the area along the pipeline which was left unstripped (28/8/91) as being the presumed route of the Icknield Way (ELV 016)(S2). Two radiocarbon samples from contexts BNH 036.011 & 013 gave dates of 3380 (plus or minus 70) and 3330 (plus or minus 80) BP (S3). Details in (S4).
