Full Description

August 1991: Excavation in advance of pipeline laying following topsoil stripping. Four small pits filled with charcoal, burnt flint and pottery. Three of these were located within 1m of each other and the fourth 4.5m further W. They were visible as smears of charcoal and burnt flint after 30cm approximately of topsoil/ploughsoil had been stripped off from the subsoil and it is possible that other non-charcoal filled features might have escaped detection given the conditions. Initially these pits resembled cremations but no burnt bone was recovered (S2). Soil samples were taken (S1). Not located during fieldwalking assessment. Date & details of finds to follow. Circa 190m W (uphill) from BA pits, EUN 018.
