Full Description

1957: `Thorington Hall, rebuilt in 1817-1820 (for Col H B Bence), at a cost of 16,000, has been recently demolished' (S1). Shown on OS 1st edition at same location as present hall (TM 422 732) although on Hodskinson's 1783 map appears to be located at approximately TM 420 727 (S2), possibly same as Park Farm now. Lodge remains. Ice-house marked on 1:25000 map in small wood at TM 421 728, remains at TM 4218 7289 standing to height of circa 1.2m, soft red bricks, 215 x 104 x 45mm. Diameter circa 4.0m, dome collapsed. In wooded area - see slides (S4)(S5).

In 1674 Richard Cooke had house with 18 hearths. In 1844 Thorington Hall in park of 200 acres. Demolished 1949. Photograph in Burke & Savill. Note: Brick kilns referred to in 1591 (S3).
November 1991: PMed brick & tile scatter around farm buildings at TM 4214 7275, presumably from Old Hall site. Also remains of two late C18/C19 brick storage(?) structures, semi-cellared, S of icehouse and two flint & mortar well/soakaway structures (internal diameter 1.3m) including tile fragments at TM 4226 7298.
