Monument record STF 003 - Church of All Saints

All Saints church, Stansfield, is in the centre of the parish, not in the village. A church was recorded here in the Domesday Book. The present church consists of a chancel, nave, S porch & W tower. The chancel & tower are Decorated. The nave is C13. Fragments of Norman masonery are to be seen in the walls of the church. The C14 W tower has a castellated parapet, angle buttresses & a square staircase turret on the SW corner, with diagonal buttresses. There is some knapped flint & stone chequer work in the base. The nave has a castellated parapet and the roof is an early C16 arched baracaded cambered tie-beam with carved spandrels. The chancel is C14 with crocketted niches flanking the E window. The castellated S porch is C15. On the N side there is an octagonal staircase turret leading to a former rood loft & the roof. The framing of the ringing chamber in the E tower is unusual having carved spandrels. There is a mutilated C15 square font with shields in quatrefoils & arcaded panels and the base of a C15 screen with cusped tracery (S1). For references - see (S1).
