Full Description

All Saints church, Chedburgh, is situated S of the parish, in the village. A church is not recorded in the Domesday book. The church is Med with major C19 alterations. It consists of chancel, nave, NW tower, vestry & S porch. It is a flint & rubble structure with limestone dressings. The chancel roof is slated, the nave roof plain tiled on the S side and concrete tiled on the N. Nave circa 1300 with single-light N & S windows, & circular W windows with inset quatrefoil. Mid C14 N & S nave doorways & 2-light S window formerly with dropped sill & with shafted rear arch; probably the site of a side altar. Major restorations in 1842 included: gault brick tower with rendered Gothic style openings, brick spire and crenellated parapets; almost total reconstruction of the chancel, with E window in mid C14 style, roof with ribbed panelled ceiling and moulded cornice; gabled vestry. Alterations in 1873 probably included: scissor braced coupled rafter nave roof; W gallery; S timber-framed open porch with traceried sidelights and carved barge-boards; complete internal refitting, including pews, pulpit and limestone font. There is a C16 pew with crude poppy-head ends and some fragments of Med glass incorporated in early C20 work in the E window (S1). For references - see (S1).
