Full Description

Churchyard and All Saints Church adjoins Great Thurlow Hall. The church is situated in the N of the parish in the village. A church was recorded here in the Domesday book. The present church has a chancel which is structurally Norman, but the rest is mostly Perpendicular. In 1741 it was greatly modernised, much of the ancient work was mutilated. The structure consists of a chancel, nave with aisles, N porch and W tower. The tower is C15, square with diagonal buttresses and a castellated parapet, it is surmounted by an open lead domed cupola with weather vane. The nave and chancel are mainly C15 although the chancel contains Norman work including engaged nock shafts at the E end. The roof tiling is C20. There is the cornice of a parvice screen in the N aisle. The chapel has a beam carved with the date and initials `TW 1616 FW'. The dado of the C15 rood screen remains with some original colouring. There is a C16 octagonal pulpit and C12 square font with arcaded sides. Brasses include one of a knight & lady (1460) and one of Thomas Underhill & Anne, his wife (1530)(S1).
