Full Description

All Saints, Hopton, situated on cross roads, in centre of village. The upper part of the C14 tower is a later addition of stone & flint chequer work. There is an interesting two-light window at western end of S aisle circa 1300. Simple C14 S porch & the contemporary buttresses to N aisle have the lower stage v-shaped. Both aisles have C14 arcades and there is a sanctus bell window in E wall of Tower. The cut off ends of both beams to floor of rood loft are still showing. The door to tower stairs in S aisle is ironclad & so is the huge C14 chest which is 87" long. Stuart holy table. The clerestory is of Tudor brick & the late mediaeval roof to nave is of great interest. It is a hammer-beam & arch-braced collar roof of very low pitch, the hammer-beams being recumbent male figures with ermine collars & holding musical instruments, books etc. The whole roof is coloured and the eastern bay, as a canopy of honour to the rood, has a sacred monogram. The deep cornice has painted on it eagles with out stretched wings. The upper part of the Tower is C18. A church was listed here in the Domesday Book. (S1)
