Full Description

Flat axe - Needhams Class 3E Cockertons Style, 18.7cms long. "Museum accessions register states `Either Sibton Abbey ruins or from Italy. Further details from donor expected', unfortunately there is no further record". Needham considers this more likely to be a British rather than an Italian axe.
The Ipswich museum accession date is 1935 (presented by Capt E L Serwen of Peasenhall, Suffolk). Further details in (S1). Note Abbey ruins may have included remains of C17/ C18 house built by John Scrivener & pulled down circa 1751- 1797. Stone coffins are described as being found in circa 1882 and an `excavation' is noted in 1892 (S2). In view of this it would seem likely that if the record of being found in Sibton Abbey ruins is correct, the flat axe was a Med or PMed redeposition of BA metalwork.
