Full Description

1994: Archaeological excavations identifed mutli-period activity. The earliest phase is represented by a curving ditch which contained a large assembelage of Mesolithic flintwork including blades and microliths. The first settlement evidence is suggested from the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age pits and postholes some of which contained quernstone fragments as well as pottery. The quernstones indicate early arable cultivation in association with the settlement. The third and final phase of activity on the area is made up of various ditches of Iron Age or Early Roman date, probably field-boundaries, on a N-S or E-W alignemnt. An arc of pot holes, some of which contained Iron Age pottery sherds was recorded in the western edge of the site suggesting the presence of a timber built roundhouse (S1)(S2).

Samples taken for macrobotanical remains produced poor results (S3)
