Full Description

1992: area of excavation within scatter CAM 011 on NE side of Cavenham Mere. Excavation revealed stripped surface stretching 150m back from Mere edge producing quantities of burnt and struck flint. Also Neolithic pottery (including large rimsherd from Fengate Ware vessel) and a few burnt features. Surface was intermittently covered by blown sand which succeeded Neolithic occupation "soil" which contained pottery and flint. There were no big concentrations of features and suggest this was a sample of a general occupation around the edge of the Mere. Surface largely undisturbed which suggests good preservation. Other areas and other features preserved under blown sand not examined (S1). Details in (S2).
July 1992: following insert of water pipe whole area rotovated/harrowed (? ) to at least 20cm depth over complete 9 m width - presume all archaeological deposits in this zone now destroyed.
