Full Description
Pre 1950: Late Palaeolithic/Mesolithic? site
`Maglemose occupation site examined by an Ipswich Bank Manager, who found a black layer of burnt flints below the turf line. Some pits were noticed - probably fire holes. Implements are reported to have been found, although present whereabouts unknown' (S1).
Details are very limited, this record should be treated with suspicion. Also the desription fits with that of features from elswehere on the heathland that have bene dated to the Saxon Period. The Palaeolithic-Mesolithic date range is that of the most recent description on this record. Maglemosian refers to the Early Mesolithic. (S2).
Area crosses Rushmere St Andrew and Kesgrave parish boundaries following boundary change
The "Foxhall Jaw" and claimed worked and burnt flints have been claimed to be from this location. This appears to be a misidentification of pits. The records of this find is now under FXL 006.
