Monument record IKN 014 - Site of undated square enclosure

Please read our .

Summary

A square, embanked enclosure, of unknown date and function, is visible as a soilmark on aerial photographs. It occupies a low-lying position, adjacent to a tributary of the River Alde and on the edge of its floodplain. The enclosure bears a superficial resemblance to Middle Bronze Age enclosures occupying similar positions on the edge of wetlands, although it is smaller and less substantial than that recorded at Ormesby St Michael, Norfolk, for example, and there is no direct evidence of Bronze Age activity at the site.

Full Description

Square enclosure appearing as cropmark, approximately 60m square. Possible moat? Other disturbances in field suggested by cropmarks (S1).

December 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The square, embanked enclosure, of unknown date and function, described above is visible as a soilmark on aerial photographs (S2)-(S3). It occupies a low-lying position, adjacent to a tributary of the River Alde and on the edge of its floodplain. It appears to be defined by a bank rather than a ditch and is unlikely to be a moat. The enclosure bears a superficial resemblance to Middle Bronze Age enclosures occupying similar positions on the edge of wetlands, although it is smaller and less substantial than that recorded at Ormesby St Michael, Norfolk (S4), for example, and there is no direct evidence of Bronze Age activity at the site.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 7th December 2015.
