Full Description

A church plus 15 acres is recorded in Saxmundham in the Domesday Survey of 1086.
Also two other churches plus 24 acres land and half plough (see SXM Misc).
Church of St John the Baptist. Consists of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, organ chamber, vestry, W tower. C14 tower, C14/15 S aisle, N aisle (?) and clerestory and former S porch (on W side). 1308 Swann chapel built. 1643/4 visited by William Dowsing. 1873 restoration, clerestory rebuilt. 1908 vestry added. Sanctus bell window in E wall of tower. Nave has good single hammer beam and arch-braced collar roof. To E of modern town & river, N & adjoining Hurtshall Park.
