Full Description
A church (plus 30 acres land and one plough) is recorded at Kelsale in the Domesday Survey of 1086.
Church of St Mary and St Peter. Consists of chancel with vestries, S aisle, nave, S porch, SW tower. Much restored and rebuilt. Fine Norman N doorway with two engaged shafts and an arch of four orders with chevron and billet ornament. Another Norman doorway has been rebuilt into S chancel aisle. There is an unusual lynch-gate. Details in (S1)(S2).
Norman: traces in tower and nave aisle, priests door in chancel (see above), N doorway.
C14: Tower and nave aisle.
C15: S chapel, S porch.
1643: Visited by Dowsing.
1876-78: Chancel aisles, vestries & S aisle rebuilt.
1890: Tower repaired (S3).
