Full Description

A half church (plus 4 acres & half acre) is recorded in vill of Hoppetuna and a church (plus 24 acres land and 1 acre meadow) in vill of Strickland, are recorded in Domesday Survey of 1086. (Also see YOX Misc Med) Church of St Peter. Consists of chancel with side chapels, nave, aisles, W tower. Details in (S1)(S2).
Heavily restored. Many brasses remaining. Early C15 font. C14 tower. C14/ C15 main structure (S3).
1597: Chancel decayed in thatching, paving and ceiling.
1837: N aisle and N chapel.
1868/1920 Restorations & part rebuilding (S3).

2019: Monitoring of works associated with the renewal of an area of flooring revealed a number of features. Of particular interest with regards to the church's development are two wall bases. One is clearly part of the east wall of the south aisle prior to the construction of the Cockfield Chapel in the mid-16th century, whilst the other ran between the columns of the south arcade, confirming the south aisle is a later addition. The other features recorded comprise two inhumations, one of which may predate the Cockfield Chapel, stone memorials, two burial vaults, the entrances to two burial vault, and ducts that probably relate to a 19th century underfloor heating system (S4).

Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2019 (S5).
